Cornwall wins World Heritage Inscription

Cornwall and West Devon win World Heritage Inscription

Cornwall and West Devon's Mining Landscape has won World Heritage Site status and is now on a par with sites including the Taj Mahal and Stonehenge.

The Objective One Programme has invested £174,888 from the European Regional Development Fund in the project, which has a total cost of £349,888.

Carleen Kelemen, Director of the Objective One Partnership, said: "The achievement of World Heritage Site will bring international recognition of the value of the Cornwall and West Devon mining landscape and the wider social and cultural achievements of the people engaged in that industry.

"The inscription will reinforce the image of Cornwall as a vibrant cultural centre and will encourage sustainable tourism initiatives and regeneration projects. High quality historic environments make interesting places to visit and to live and work in and will attract more business to invest in the area. More visitors and more investment will be good for Cornwall's aim to be a globally competitive economy."

Mark Yeoman, Deputy Director of the Objective One Partnership and environmental champion, added: "At a time when Cornwall is undergoing regeneration the World Heritage Site Management Plan is a valuable planning tool in ensuring the proper conservation and management of the site. It will also serve as a catalyst for regeneration projects that both conserve and celebrate the region's distinctive characteristics while looking to boost this region's economy."

To date Objective One has invested over £6 million in heritage-led regeneration projects within the bid area, levering in £17.5 million from public and private sector sources. Projects include:

Harvey's Foundry where a complex of derelict historic buildings has been transformed to provide state of the art business space, workshops and community facilities.

The Mineral Tramways Project which is creating a 30km heritage trail network of multi use bridleways to provide an overall 60 km integrated network linking mine sites, mining heritage attractions, settlements, public transport and visitor facilities.

Wheal Kitty where a former tin mine has been given a new lease of life as high quality workspace, with tenants ranging from web designers to a new radio station.

The St Just Heritage Area Regeneration Project where major infrastructure works have been carried out together with the enhancement of the public realm and the conservation of internationally important sites.

Falmouth Heritage Economic Regeneration Scheme which has transformed businesses and public access in the town centre. This in turn has attracted more visitors and business and secured and created jobs.
