New Cornish Clothing Range Skating to Success
13.03.07
Two entrepreneurs, based in St Ives, have teamed up together to create Rebus Collective, a new clothing brand aimed at the youth market. Influenced by world street culture, fine art and graffiti, Rebus clothing launched UK wide in March 2007.
The new clothing range initially is made up of t-shirts and sweatshirts featuring the unique typography and graphic designs of co-founder Tom Sutcliffe. Having already featured at Margin at the London Fashion Show, some of the Cornish businesses that are stocking the new range include: Force Majeure at Discovery Quay, Falmouth and West Coast, St Ives; and Fish Boy, Penzance. Other stockists in the UK include: My Yard (Bs8), Bristol and Unify, Cambridge.
The business is looking to continue its expansion this summer and as part of its commitment to the local community, is offering the opportunity for students and creatives in the area to work with the business and develop their own designs and clothing skills. It is envisaged that Rebus Collective will collaborate with multiple artists and designers.
Rebus Collective is the brainchild of Hamish Barron, who has spent the past five years sailing around the world where he was exposed to many different cultures and thought up the concept for Rebus Collective. Business partner Tom, has spent the past few years exhibiting and producing commissioned artwork. His influence is varied, combining modern street culture as well European fine art from his studies in Italy.
Hamish Barron, co-founder said:
"We are delighted to be working with such high profile clothing stores. We are both passionate about art, but Rebus Collective is more than just a clothing brand, the environment and education is also important to us. We are currently looking at ways of delivering an environmental sustainable product and hope by the end of the year to be producing clothing using organic materials.
"We also recognise the need to support local talent which is why we are committed to assisting local fashion designers. Working at Rebus we hope will provide students and creatives with a stepping stone towards developing further skills that will be useful in a commercial context."
Tom Sutcliffe continued:
"Cornwall's strong creative culture makes it the ideal location for the launch of Rebus. Our designs aim to reflect Cornwall's vibrant community, combined with influences of different street cultures across the globe.
"Music is also integral to our creativity and we are planning to work with local musicians as we develop the Rebus Collective brand. "
