Spotlight on... Hayle

Located on the West coast of the Cornish peninsula is the historic town of Hayle. Undergoing vast regeneration, Hayle is the latest area to be featured in our "spotlight on." section which showcases different areas of Cornwall. The aim is to bring you news of regeneration projects both lifestyle and commercial and provide the latest on exciting new workspace developments.
Hayle Harbour
The proposed plans for the transformation of Hayle harbour are expected to be submitted by ING Real Estate before the end of April. The scheme, which will be the largest single private sector investment project in Cornwall, will revitalise Hayle's economy and create a better environment including regenerating one of the most important Victorian ports in the country.
The plans include retail space, business and industrial units, residential units, Marina and sailing club, Health Club, hotel and Community facilities. The development is part of a wider programme of regeneration for the town and will bring increased opportunities and employment to the area.
Harvey's Foundry
Harvey's foundry, formally a derelict site; has been converted into employment space for 17 businesses employing 70 people. The site is being developed in three phases the first of which was the development of 740 square metres of office space now named Dowren House and the refurbishment of the listed John Harvey House. The second phase at Foundry Farm has created 17 live/work units that are used specifically by craft based business. The third phase is currently being planned for the near future.
Wave Hub
The proposed Wave Hub is an innovative renewable energy project that will harvest the energy of the waves to produce electricity. Wave Hub could generate enough electricity for 7,500 homes, directly saving 300,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide over 25 years. This would support South West England's target for generating 15% of the region's power from renewable sources by 2010. The project could create an estimated 700 jobs for Hayle and a contribution of £27 million a year to the economy as a result of the creation of a new wave power industry. There is potential for the Wave hub to attract further Inward investment to the area as the renewable energy sector develops around the project.
Loggans Mill
A masterplan is being finalised for the Loggans Moor site - including the conversion and restoration of Loggans Mill, currently owned by Penwith District Council. This mixed use development by Montgomery Property Group Ltd will provide a 60 bedroom hotel with conference facilities, a business park providing in excess of 9000 square metres of employment space, leisure facilities and supporting 'café quarter'. The mill itself will be converted into offices for lease on the upper three floors with community/exhibition space on the ground floor.
The architects have been briefed to create a 'gateway development' on this prominent site beside the A30 running from the listed mill to the protected SSSI wildlife site. A sustainable approach to design is also being adopted to source alternative energy sources, rainwater harvesting and an extensive green space.
Hayle Retail Park
Located in a prominent position on the A30 gateway to Penwith, adjacent to Hayle, the newly developed Hayle Retail Park opened in September 2006 and provides accommodation for four retail units totaling 49,340 sq ft. The units have been ocuppied by Next, Marks & Spencer, Boots and Costa Coffee employing a total of 1,041 people at the £20 million Hayle Retail Park.
