Business booming in Cornwall
Cornwall Pure Business, the county's inward investment service, a service of Cornwall Enterprise, held a celebratory event for businesses that have moved to the county at the National Maritime Museum on Tuesday 4 December.
Sponsored by solicitors Coodes, The inaugural I'm Glad I came to Cornwall Club event, was modelled on the popular London "I'd Rather be in Cornwall Club" event that Cornwall Pure Business holds every quarter. Starting with a champagne reception the event celebrated the county's business achievements and provided an opportunity for inward investors to network with one another and meet with relevant public sector support organisations.
John Berry, Managing Director of Cornwall Enterprise, addressed the audience of eighty people and outlined the county's ongoing commitment to businesses. Commenting on the event Mr Berry said: "The county has invested significantly in its business infrastructure and also promoting Cornwall as a place for business. As a result we are seeing increasing numbers of knowledge economy based businesses moving to the county which in turn is generating additional skilled jobs and contributing to our local economy. 2008 is an exciting time for the county and with the forthcoming European funding our economy has even greater potential for growth."
Lucy Hunt, Inward Investment Manager at Cornwall Pure Business added: "We were really keen to host an event for those businesses that have made the move to the county. Moving to a new area can be very daunting and it takes time to build a company profile. This event enabled many inward investors to hear about what others were doing as well as find out about what support was available to their businesses. To date we have helped over ninety businesses relocate, resulting in the creation of over 500 jobs. These inward investors are critical in helping the county's business economy to evolve and provide skilled employment for the next generation."
Businesses that attended the event included specialists in content management systems, design, web design, sports car manufacturing, marketing, public relations, environmental technology and pharmaceutical consultancy.
Rob Edlin, Managing Director, of internet marketing consultancy Niddocks said:
"We moved to Cornwall about eight months ago and have been overwhelmed by the kindness and support of the Cornish community. We could not have had a better start for our business. As well as maintaining clients up country, we now work with a number of local businesses on their internet marketing and continue to carry out training courses across the UK. We love Cornwall and are committed to the county. To be able to have access to our passion of diving and run a business is a dream come true."
The event also provided Cornwall Pure Business with the opportunity to thank Cornwall's support agencies such as SWRDA, ActNow, UCP and Combined Universities of Cornwall business team as well as their funding bodies, Cornwall County Council and Objective One.
Jeremy Harvey, Managing Partner of Coodes, concluded:
"Coodes were delighted to support this event, a resounding success for Cornwall Pure Business. As a firm we are committed to helping new businesses to the county to develop and to contribute to the economic success of Cornwall."
