The newly named Select Yacht Group (formerly Cornish Crabbers) has a combined turnover of around £4.5 million and offers over 20 different models. Their customers range from millionaires with a taste for luxury cruising in the Caribbean to ordinary families whose idea of heaven is spend a summer's day pottering around Cornwall's idyllic creeks and coves in a sturdy little gaff-rigger.

Cornish Crabbers started building boats in the picturesque village of Rock some 30 years ago, and their unique mix of traditional craftsmanship and modern materials rapidly won an enthusiastic following. The company is still based in Rock, but these days the core of its boat-building operation is a state-of-the-art facility built at a cost of around £0.5m, with help from the South West Investment Group and the DTI Enterprise Grant Scheme.

But the recent expansion will not change the company's approach to every boat it makes. Managing Director Frank Colam sums it up: "It must be functional, it must be beautiful, and it must be the best of its kind."
