Research Instruments makes highly sophisticated micro-manipulation devices used in IVF treatment and other processes that demand extreme accuracy and sensitivity.

The company began to focus on this market in the early days of IVF, and by continuously extending and upgrading its product offering it has remained well ahead of the field. As well as being the leading supplier in the UK, it exports some 70% of its production to about 40 countries around the world.

RI was the subject of a management buy-out in 2000, and over the next three years the dynamic new management team tripled turnover to £1.5m. By this time, RI had clearly outgrown its premises in Penryn.

Fortunately, it was able to find exactly what it needed without having to leave Cornwall: 11,000 sq feet of purpose-built high-tech production facilities and offices near Falmouth. These were secured with the help of a £490,000 investment by the South West Regional Development Agency.
